The Punta Gorda Historical Society History

Old Punta Gorda, Inc., a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, today known as the Punta Gorda Historical Society (PGHS), was established in 1983 by a group of dedicated citizens who volunteered their efforts to preserve Punta Gorda’s notable historic buildings through historic preservation and restoration projects, educational programs, and events.

The Punta Gorda Historical Society currently owns and maintains six historic buildings within the city. The Punta Gorda Historic Train Depot was built in 1928, and the Punta Gorda Woman’s Club Building built in 1927. Both are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Society also owns and is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the four buildings located within Punta Gorda History Park. Revenue to support the park is generated through grants, donations, membership dues, participation fees from events such as the History Park Sunday Market and Kick Back Music in the Park, and by leasing the park’s buildings to local nonprofit artisans’ guilds.
