Punta Gorda Historical Society
April 1, 2018
On May 1st and 2nd there is a unique opportunity for you to double the impact of your donation to preserve Punta Gorda history. The Giving Challenge is a fun 24-hour fundraising event. It starts at noon on May 1 (Tuesday) and runs through noon May 2 (Wednesday). You can gift as little as $25 to participate - that gift will result in $50 donation to save the history of Punta Gorda.
This year the Punta Gorda History Center and the Punta Gorda Historical Society are partnering to encourage an even greater impact on saving our history. The Patterson Foundation will provide a 1:1 match for all unique donations, up to $100 per donor, per organization. If in your generosity you elect to give one organization $100, you can then give another donation to the other organization so that both organizations will receive the benefit of the matching gift. Or you can split whatever donation you wish to give to double the benefit to both organizations.
How will this help?
The Punta Gorda History Center is preserving, scanning and indexing the vast Vernon Peeples Collection so that the resources he assembled will be available for many generations to come. The Center is also taking on other local collections including materials from the Mural Society, Historical Society, and Woman's Club that must be preserved and catalogued. Local journalists, speakers, educators, writers and researchers, and others seeking information have used the resources of the History Center in the past year. This year your donation will help the Center purchase equipment, software and educational materials that will assist in bringing access to Punta Gorda's Past online and throughout the community.
The Punta Gorda Historical Society is preserving the many historic buildings that connect us to Punta Gorda's past and offering programs on the history of the community. The upkeep of the historic treasures the Society maintains is daunting, both physically and financially. This year the Society asks your help in saving the aging Punta Gorda Woman's Club, an iconic, historic structure on Punta Gorda's downtown Sullivan Street. The building is badly in need of repair - fixing a leaky roof severely damaged by Hurricane Irma being the priority. The Club's building has been the home to the 1940s USO, hundreds of fundraisers and community events, the first library in the community and has been the meeting place for many local organizations. Its mission revival style facade is probably one of the most photographed in the City.
